HAMISH McGONAGALL announced the start of the 2010 York Ebor
Published: 17/08/2010 by Stuart Riley

HAMISH McGONAGALL announced the start of the 2010 York Ebor meeting with an impressive display in the opening handicap of the four-day festival.
The 9-1 shot travelled sweetly for David Allan and quickened impressively from a prominent position to pull clear of the field and land the handicap by a length and a half.
It was a question of heads and necks as there was a four-way photo-finish to decide the remaining places. Judge 'N Jury came out best of the rest, with the 25-1 shot just getting the better of 9-2 favourite Quest For Success, who grabbed the final-place spot for each-way backers, by a head. Haajes was a short-head behind, with a further short-head back to Captain Dunne.
The first two were always prominent, with Judge 'N Jury leading the field through the first half of the race while Hamish McGonagall sat third.
The Tim Easterby-trained five-year-old, who was second in this race last year off a 5lb lower mark, travelled superbly and there was only one winner two furlongs out as he galloped all over his competitors.
Easterby said: "This is our Ascot and we try to run everything we can. He has been a great horse for us. He only has two speeds at home - a hack and very fast - and we have to work him on his own.
"He is a good, solid horse, a proper horse. He is also a big horse, and he took time to come to himself, but he has really strengthened up now."
Easterby, who may step Hamish McGonagall out of handicap company after winning off a mark of 104, added: "I can't think of another handicap for him."

Midnight Martini scoops big prize in opener - York
Published: 20/08/2009 by Lewis Porteous

MIDNIGHT MARTINI scooped the first prize of £147,720 with a game performance in the opening race on day three of the Ebor festival.

The only filly in the race,Midnight Martini raced at the front throughout and took the overall lead approaching the two furlong marker.
The challengers were queuing up in behind but the Tim Easterby-trained two-year-old kept finding for David Allan's urgings and just held the late challenge of  Carnaby Streetand Sole Power to score at odds of 18-1.

Midnight Martini's victory was her third straight win and her jockey was delighted with her progression.

Allan said: "She was a little keen early on and raced to the front readilly. She started to look around in front but picked up when the challengers came. She is a really tough and genuine filly."

Easterby added: "This filly loves hard ground, and I was praying they weren't going to water in case we had too much rain."

David Allan completed a treble - Redcar
Published: 18/10/2008 by Tom O'Ryan

David Allan, enjoying his best campaign, completed a treble.
The Malton jockey kicked off aboard the Eric Alston-trained Impressible - a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Reverence - in the 6f fillies' maiden before scoring on Bollin Greta, who followed up her recent Pontefract success in the 1m6f handicap for Tim Easterby and Sir Neil Westbrook.
Russ Garritty, Easterby's assistant said: "Tim has always liked her and we feel she'll be even better next year."
Allan brought up his threetimer aboard Easterby's Medici Time, who responded to a firsttime visor in the 6f maiden to post a 40-1 success.

Plan pays off with Hamish McGonagall - Musselburgh
Published: 12/10/2008 by Colin Russell

TIM EASTERBY had been aiming Hamish McGonagall at the 5f National Express York Sprint Cup for some time, and he hit the target for owners Reality Racing when David Allan got the three-year-old up in the last couple of strides to land the £37,000-plus first prize by a neck from the gallant Cheveton.
Afterwards, Allan said: "We had a good position early on, but then a few went by and I was worried for a time.
"He became a bit unbalanced when I first asked him, but then he quickened up well."
Bought for 17,000gns as a yearling, the winner was scoring for the fourth time, and was bringing his career earnings to more than £70,000.
"We always have a horse or two, and there are seven of us from all over the country in the syndicate," said the owners' spokesman Paul Noddings.

Princess Ellis to scramble home by a short head - Ayr
Published: 22/06/2008 by Gordon Brown

THE frame may be small, but the heart is big and by gum she's quick. That sums up Look Busy, a gutsy and record-breaking winner of the Listed Land o'Burns Stakes for Alan Berry and Ayrshire-born Daniel Tudhope.
Tudhope had another local lad, David Allan, for company in the closing stages as his mount nailed long-timer leader Princess Ellis to scramble home by a short head.
And, in a race staged at a scorching pace, all nine runners beat the 15-year-old 5f course record of 57.2sec, with the winner setting a new best time of 55.68sec.
"She's really game, and though she didn't grow much during the winter, she put some beef on," Berry said. "I overdid it a bit by running her 13 times last year, so she'll have a month off now and then continue in fillies' and mares' races like this.
"There are some options for her at places like Chester, and I'd like to have a go at the race named after Chris Deuters at Pontefract. We might even go for a Group race towards the end of the season."
Tudhope added: "It wasn't easy, as she was hampered at the start and we were further back than I would have liked.
But she knuckled down well and got there in the final strides."
Allan, who was given a two-day carelessriding ban for his efforts on Princess Ellis, bounced back immediately to score on Birkside for in-form Declan Carroll in the 1m5f handicap before completing a double on Eric Alston's Maison Dieu in the 6f handicap.

Haigh Hall oozes class on debut in juvenile maiden - Thirsk
Published: 18/05/2008 by Tom O'Ryan

REMEMBER the name. Haigh Hall. The two-year-old filly, trained by Tim Easterby for David Armstrong, made a winning debut on her local track with a silky smooth victory under David Allan.
What she achieved came as no surprise to Easterby.
"She could be exceptional," said the trainer. "She's the best filly we've had for a long time; we've known that for quite a while.
"She would have run before now, only she was coughing and she also had a bout of sore shins.
But, from the work she had done at home, we knew she was something special. They don't come around very often."
Plans for the daughter of Kyllachy, who scored by a cosy threeparts of a length from Excellent Show, finishing clear of the remainder, include the Hilary Needler Trophy at Beverley.
"I would like to think she's a Queen Mary filly, but I wouldn't be sending her down there if it was hard ground," said Easterby.

Fayr Jag killed in stalls accident
Published: 22/04/2008 by Ray Gilpin

GROUP 1 winner Fayr Jag suffered a tragic end to his career yesterday when he broke a shoulder in a freak accident at Pontefract, writes Ray Gilpin.
The Tim Easterby-trained nine-year-old, ridden by David Allan, was blindfolded and being led into the stalls when he backed out before lurching violently forward and crashed back into the structure.
Allan said: "He had the blinds on but then went in reverse and backed out of the stalls. Then, still blindfolded, he launched himself forward into the iron bars and I went over his head into the stalls.
"I was very lucky but it was a terrible way for Fayr Jag to die. He gave me my two biggest wins in Group 3s and I feel very sorry for his owner Jon at han Gill."
Easterby's father Peter said: "He was up there with the best sprinters we have had. He even met the Queen after he had won the Golden Jubilee and he has been a great servant to the stable and to his owner Jonathan Gill.
"We were going to get him ready for the Stewards' Cup, and we are really going to miss him."
Fayr Jag won 11 races, with his Group 1 success coming in the 2004 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. He had previously dead-heated in the 2003 Wokingham, while three years later he won the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle and the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury.
He earned more than £423,000 in win and place prize-money.

Music on song under enterprising Allan ride: BEVERLEY
Published: 12/09/2007 by Ray Gilpin

TIM EASTERBY'S Making Music is making hay while the sun shines and she completed a hat-trick under an enterprising ride from David Allan in the Class 5 5f handicap.
Allan had the Makbul filly smartly out of the stalls and making the running, and although it was a desperately close call in the end, she held off Lake Chini and Hotham by a neck and a head.
Easterby said: "She is very fast and the fast ground makes all the difference. She won it out of the stalls.
"She is in at Warwick on Saturday with a penalty for this, but I shouldn't think she will go up much so we might give it a miss - she is also in over five furlongs at Ayr next week."

Hellvelyn given Sprint Cup aim after Bullet win: BEVERLEY
Published: 26/08/2007 by Will O'Hanlon

Lightning struck twice when trainer Brian Ellison landed the £50,000 1m2f handicap with Teslin, as he had won the same prize with Ashkal Way two years ago. Teslin, bought this spring out of Mark Johnson's yard, was produced late by David Allan - substituting for Tony Hamilton, who had earlier picked up a neck injury - to beat Monte Alto by three-quarters of a length.
Teslin was a 33-1 shot, but his win came as no great surprise to Ellison. "This is a decent horse - he beat Authorized when winning his maiden at Newbury last year," said Ellison. "We had him gelded as soon as he came to us, and he found seven furlongs too sharp on his first run back at Goodwood. His target is the Cambridgeshire - and I think he'll have a great chance there - with one more run before."
Allan went on to complete a big-priced double on Royal Composer for Tim Easterby in the second division of the 5f maiden, which helped to offset the one-day ban he picked up for misuse of his whip on Monasheemini in the first division, won by Midnight Sky. He is stood down on September 6, while Tony Hamilton is suspended on September 5 for careless riding on Kalanda Kurl in the 7 1/2 f juvenile maiden, a race won well by the Mark Johnston-trained Jadaara. Royston Ffrench was also stood down on September 5 for taking Lanterns Of Gold into the wrong stall in the same race.

Webbow keeps it local to bring off: DONCASTER
Published: 18/08/2007 by Will O'Hanlon

WEBBOW, laid out for the featured 1m handicap, delivered right on cue as he was produced late by David Allan to beat favourite Ekhtiaar by a neck.
Webbow is trained for local owner Dave Bowker by Tim Easterby, and the pair had this race in mind for some time for the progressive gelding, who had plenty to do from halfway but answered Allan's every call to get on top close home. "That's how Dave likes to ride him - he likes to come and mow them down," said Bowker. "He rode the perfect race."
The winner is proving a star - this was his third win this term - and connections are eyeing another valuable handicap at the Ayr Gold Cup meeting next month. "He tested the patience of his owner and his trainer a few times," said Easterby, "but he's going well now and he seems to handle most sorts of ground."

Success by 20-1 shot Welcome Return: NEWCASTLE
Published: 09/08/2007 by Tom O'Ryan

Jim McGrath wasn't on course to see his colours carried to success by 20-1 shot Welcome Return in the 7f nursery. Blinkered for the first time, the Tim Easterby-trained filly scooted home by three lengths under David Allan, who did a good job of making her mind up for her before she asserted her superiority.
Easterby and Allan, an in-form combination this summer, went on to complete a near 94-1 double courtesy of the well-backed Viva Volta, who enjoyed the luxury of a soft lead in the 7f handicap and made the most of it, winning by two and a half lengths.

Malcheek drops back in trip to earn ticket to Great St Wilfrid: RIPON
Published: 07/08/2007 by Tom O'Ryan

SPEED, they say, deceives. Yesterday it was Malcheek doing the deceiving when, dropped back to 6f for the first time in a year and running over the trip for just the fourth time in his career, he clinched the featured Armstrong Memorial Handicap to earn himself a tilt at the Great St Wilfrid Handicap back here on Saturday week.
After seeing David Allan bring the five-year-old home by a length, trainer Tim Easterby, who has largely concentrated on 7f races for Malcheek, said: "Don't ask me why I haven't run him more often over six because he's a horse who has always had plenty of speed.
"He stays 7f - and has won five races over that trip - but doesn't get a yard further and what he needs is genuine fast ground. It's definitely the Great St Wilfrid next."

In-form trainers Mullineaux and Weymes continue purple patches: BEVERLEY
Published: 18/07/2007 by Tom O'Ryan

Medici Pearl responded to a daring ride from David Allan to run out a comfortable winner of the feature 71/2f handicap.
Dropped out in the early stages, the 11-4 favourite got a couple of timely splits between horses before bursting into the lead at the furlong marker. Trainer Tim Easterby said: "She's a bit buzzy and would have done too much if she'd raced up with the pace. I told David to stick to the inside rail and take a chance, and not pull out on to the worst of the ground. It probably didn't do the owners a lot of good watching it, but it paid off in the end."
The owners are all members of Ryedale Partners No 3, which is run by Tony Raby, who has been putting together similar partnerships within the Easterby yard for six years. "We've got eight horses in training this year and six are winners," said Raby. "And, with this winner, that's £300,000 in prize-money our horses have won since we started."
Easterby and Allan went on to complete a near 17-1 double when Thewhirlingdervish belied his veteran status by notching his second success of the campaign in the 2m handicap. "There was a time when he didn't like soft ground, but it doesn't seem to bother him now," said Easterby.
"He's up at Easthorpe. Dudley Taylor, who looks after that yard, rides him out every day. I never see him!"

OKAY, so it wasn't the FA Cup. It was more important than that! At least it was to the northern Flat jockeys who, after weeks of hard training, gained a resounding 5-2 triumph over their southern counterparts in a fiercely competitive football match that raised £ 11,000 for the Injured Jockeys' Fund.
The visiting side, well-backed favourites with Coral for the match late last month, were always in command under the Newmarket Town FC floodlights, with captain David Allan leading the way with two goals. Tony Hamilton, Nicky Lawes and Phillip Makin also got on the scoresheet for a team that included Dale Gibson, Paul Hanagan, Tom Eaves, Paul Mulrennan, Kevin Darley and Tony Culhane.
"We'd been practising hard and all the lads played well. It was a tough match, but it's a great feeling to pull it off for the north!" said Allan, undoubtedly the man of the match for his sheer speed and skill around the pitch.
Apprentices Jamie Jones and Liam Jones got the two goals for the southern team, led by Franny Norton and including Jamie Spencer, Frankie Dettori and Martin Dwyer.
"We weren't as well prepared or as well organised as the northern lads, and they also had Dave Allan, who is different gear to the rest of us, but it was a good night," said Norton, who added with a smile: "I'm a bit peeved to be beaten as I hate getting beaten at anything. And, on top of that, I'm Liverpool born and bred, and an avid supporter of Liverpool, so I should have been playing for the northern team!"

Long-term plan realised as Rosbay revels in mud: NEWCASTLE
Published: 29/08/2006 by David Carr

IT MAY now offer scarcely a third of the money it once did, but the Blaydon Race is still worth winning and Tim Easterby landed it for the first time as Rosbay revelled in the mud to fulfil a long-term plan and capture the bank holiday feature.
Although the 1m nursery offered only £11,218 to the winner this year, compared to the £29,830 earned by The Fly when it was launched to a great fanfare in 1996, it still attracted promising runners from the powerful two-year-old strings of Paul Cole, Mick Channon and Mark Johnston.
However, persistent heavy showers ensured the ground was soft and none handled it as well as Rosbay, who was always cruising after being switched to the stands' side soon after the start, moved smoothly into the lead a furlong out and came home a very comfortable three-length winner.
"He is an absolute different animal on soft ground," said winning jockey David Allan. "When you get him in behind he switches off nice and he does the rest for you."
Easterby, who saddled the runner-up in 1999 and 2002, was represented by Keith Stone, who said of the winner: "He has always been a nice horse and this race has been the plan for a long time. He did it quite well and it is nice for his owners, a syndicate from Thirsk."

Ponty Rossa in line for step up the ladder after taking big prize: NEWMARKET
Published: 06/08/2006 by Tony Elves

PONTY ROSSA could have earned a step up in class after taking the £20,000 nursery prize back to Yorkshire.
Tim Easterby's runners in this type of race at Newmarket are always worth a second look and the 10-1 chance, winner of her previous two starts, was soon holding a prominent position under David Allan, who gave the free-sweating filly her head well over a furlong out.
She just started to idle a little in front in the closing stages, but held the challenge of Gremlin by three-quarters of a length.
Easterby's assistant, Keith Stone, said: "She is a nice filly and will probably be upped to a Listed race and try to get some black type. David said he had gone too soon, but she was going so well he had to let her go."

Game Go Tech repeats last year's dose in feature handicap: REDCAR
Published: 25/06/2006 by Colin Russell

GO TECH added another line to his impressive CV with a game success in the featured mile-and-a-quarter handicap.
Successful by a neck in the equivalent event last season, he landed the spoils by the same margin, David Allan riding a fine race from the front, gradually quickening the pace in the straight after setting a slow early gallop, and having enough in reserve to hold Isidore Bonheur.
Trained by Tim Easterby, he is owned by Ryedale Partners No 4, a syndicate that includes several members of the RaceTech racecourse team. He has proved a marvellous servant for them as this was his eighth success, and it took his career earnings past the £100,000 mark.
"We thought that Instructor would go on, but I told Dave to go on if there wasn't a gallop, and he rode a great race. This horse loves this firm ground," said Easterby's assistant, Keith Stone.
He was the second winner of the day for Allan, who landed the preceding mile-and-three-quarter handicap on Let It Be, who was also winning the race for the second year in a row. Once more, it was a close call, but the verdict again went Allan's way as his mount, from the Keith Reveley yard, got the better of Compton Eclaire by a short head.

Heavy fall rules Allan out of Go Tech success: Pontefract
Published: 23/09/2005 Reporter: David Carr

FOR the second week running, jockeys were lucky to escape serious injury after a frightening incident during the five-furlong handicap.
Seven days after a loose horse galloped the wrong way up the straight and came close to colliding with the oncoming field, two riders were fired into the ground in the race won by Golden Asha. Musical Fair, ridden by David Allan, appeared to be squeezed for room on the inside rail a furlong and a half out and he came down, in turn unseating Paul Hanagan from the pursuing Sir Sandrovitch.
A stewards' inquiry judged that the fall had been caused by Unlimited's drifting across and interfering with Musical Fair, and his jockey Tony Culhane was banned for two days (October 3-4).
Hanagan, who broke a collarbone in a fall in almost exactly the same place here last month, escaped unscathed this time, but Allan was taken to Pinderfields Hospital for x-rays on an injured right shoulder - costing him victory on Go Tech in the following £20,000 mile-anda-quarter handicap.
Kevin Darley took his place on the 3-1 joint favourite, who went clear before the final furlong to score by a comfortable length and a half, repeating his 2004 victory in the race.
"Go Tech loves this ground," trainer Tim Easterby said. "He loves good ground and small fields. I would like to tryhim over a mile and a half - he ran in the November Handicap last year, but it came up soft and it was hopeless."
Allan had made a happier start to the afternoon as he initiated a 33-1 double for Easterby on Damelza, who defied top weight in the fillies' nursery.

Dave Allan, eking out a solid niche as a northern jockey, moved on to the 40-winner mark for the year after completing a double for his boss, Tim Easterby, on Caloosa and Damelza.
The former made all in the juvenile seller, while Damelza scored stylishly in the second leg of the seven-furlong maiden when winning by three lengths.
"She's a nice filly, a good buy at 8,000gns, and although she's had sore shins and a bit of ringworm, she's back on course now," said Easterby of the daughter of Orpen.
For Allan, this brace of successes left him hopeful of achieving his best-ever score and reaching his seasonal target. "I had 49 winners last year, January-to-January, and my aim this time is to ride 50 during the turf season," said the Malton jockey.

Newcastle: Mullaad sparks a double as Easterby keeps it in the family
Published: 20/05/2005 (Sport) Ray Gilpin

TIM EASTERBY has followed in the footsteps of his father Peter in taking a liking to this course, and he made another profitable visit when he and his stable jockey David Allan completed a double with Mullaad and Princess Kiotto.
Mullaad was only just beaten on his Beverley debut, and at one stage it did not appear as if luck was going his way here, but Allan weaved him through to find daylight, and when he did he quickened to get up and beat Overstayed by a neck in the five-furlong juvenile maiden.
He looked a bit better than the bare form, and Easterby said: ``He will improve a lot on that, he is so laid-back. If he comes out of this race all right he will go for the `Massey' [the Brian Yeardley Continental Two-Year-Old Trophy on June 8] at Beverley.''
Princess Kiotto, who is blessed with plenty of stamina, led two out in the two-mile handicap and the further they went the better she went, passing the post with five lengths to spare.
Easterby said: ``She stays forever, and we might look for a race with a bit more prize-money now. She seems to like it here.''

Redcar: Allan fires in double to make it eight for week
Published: 25/08/2003 (News) Colin Russell

APPRENTICE David Allan rounded off a memorable week with a double on Cashneem in the mile handicap and Mexican Pete in the mile-and-three- furlong handicap. Having already won on Ruthie for his boss Tim Easterby at Beverley in the afternoon, he brought his tally for the week up to eight.
Cashneem, now with Mark Brisbourne, was gaining his first win for more than two years, though he got home by only a short head in a driving finish with the penalised African Sahara.
Owned by the six-strong syndicate named the Law Abiding Citizens, the five-year-old was formerly trained by Peter Harris but was sent to Newmarket's Autumn Sales last October to dissolve that particular partnership and was bought by his owners for 4,000gns.
Allan completed his double on Mexican Pete, who gained his second win of the season in the mile-and-three-furlong handicap.
"The little horse deserved that as he has been so consistent.
"He is a tough sort and always eats up when he comes home and I hope to run him again either at Catterick or Salisbury in the nextfew days," said his trainer Peter Hiatt.

Catterick: Gladys initiates a double-up for Allan

Smart apprentice David Allan, who has made giant strides since joining Tim Easterby in the summer, again impressed when getting Gladys Aylward home by half a length from The Gambler in the first division of the seven-furlong maiden, before following up on Santisima Trinidad in the seven-furlong handicap.
"David has given both of them good rides," said Easterby, who was taking his score to a best-ever 80 winners. "Santisima Trinidad has two whorls on her forehead, which is, apparently, the sign of a genuine horse. Mind you, I wouldn't bank on it in every case!"

PONTEFRACT: Deserved praise for jubilant Callan

IN an inquiry held over from Beverley on September 24, apprentice David Allan was given a two-day ban for irresponsible riding on Highland Gait, who was unplaced. He will miss racing on October 16 and 17. David Kinsella, who also rode in that race, was fined pounds 200 for leaving the course early.

Betting Bureau: Captain's Log worth noting on a day of little appeal

...
David Allan is a jockey to keep an eye on. He won for us from a poor draw on Mary Jane at Thirsk recently and he had clearly done his homework again yesterday when he had a big-priced win and a third when again starting on the wrong side.
Today, Allan is at Leicester, where curiously the ground is still reckoned to be on the quick side underneath all the water that fell yesterday.
He looks to have a reasonable chance on Sylva Storm in the Stag Apprentice Handicap (5.20) if the meeting does get the go-ahead.

DAVID ALLAN also went on to complete a double aboard Mary Jane in the apprentice handicap, named in honour of Tom Lynch, Mick Easterby's head lad for some 30 years, to mark his lifetime in racing.
Mary Jane, trained by Nigel Tinkler, was winning the race for the second successive year, having also been partnered to victory 12 months ago by Allan.

Newcastle: Manaar foils Kelly's hopes of a double
Published: 08/08/2002 (Yesterday's Action) Tom O"Ryan

Shane Kelly's hopes of a quick double in the second leg of the maiden came unstuck when his odds-on mount Manaar was unable to cope with the strong finish of Go Tech, well-ridden by apprentice David Allan, who is making giant strides since joining Tim Easterby.
Go Tech, whose owners include a large contingent from Racetech, has an exaggerated knee action and his trainer's father, Peter Easterby, said: "I've never seen a horse with a higher action in my life; he's like a Hackney horse.
"I told David to get him balanced, and that if he could stay in touch with the favourite he might do him at the end. And he did."

Tim Easterby became the third trainer this season to reach the half-century mark courtesy of Freya's Dream, who won the showcase handicap in fine style under Willie Supple to record her third win of the season.
"It wasn't the strongest of races for pounds 12,000, so it's nice to win it with an improving filly," said Easterby. "She hurt her back in the stalls last year and was never right afterwards, but she's thriving now."
Easterby went on to complete a double when Timing clinched the two-mile handicap with a sparkling late burst under David Allan, who was notching his first win for his new boss.

Redcar: Dizzy In The Head has O'Reilly celebrating

JIMMY O'REILLY, back in the training groove after a spell away, provided a reminder of his talents when his Dizzy In The Head, ridden by apprentice David Allan, had too much firepower for favourite Ridicule in the six- furlong handicap.
The three-year-old has now won both his starts this season. "He prefers easier ground, so he's done well to win," said O'Reilly, who has now sent out five winners from his Barnsley yard. "We've only got six horses, but we've room for more."

NEWCASTLE: Plate could be next for Collier Hill

COLLIER HILL won the mile-and-a-half apprentice classified stakes under David Allan and, as the gelding's owner Russell Hall lives in Cumbria, the Cumberland Plate at Carlisle could be the next race on the agenda for the Alan Swinbank-trained gelding.

Beverley: Brittain faith justified as Dasar breaks well
Published: 18/04/2002 (Yesterday's Action) Colin Russell

MEL BRITTAIN struck with his first two-year-old runner of the season when Dasar landed the first division of the maiden auction under David Allan.
"I've got nine two-year-olds and I thought she'd go well if she got out on terms," said the winning handler, who trains her for a syndicate headed by Sam Chambers who, like Brittain, is in the steel business.
"When we first put her in the stalls she lost ten lengths, next time she lost four, but she's gradually got better so I was hoping that if she broke on terms she'd be all right," Brittain added.
This was the first success of the year for apprentice Allan, who joined the winning trainer last summer.
"David won the Racing School scholarship to go to Dubai in the winter, but when he came back he was a bit heavy and hasn't had many rides. His weight is right now, as he can do 7st 12lb," Brittain added.

Wolverhampton: Artist responds to change of scenery

ROYAL ARTIST, a decent handicapper for William Haggas two years ago, has been in the doldrums over the past year, but a recent switch to Mel Brittain seems to have had a positive effect on the gelding and he struck at the first time of asking for the Warthill trainer when capturing the first division of the seven-furlong handicap under David Allan.

Southwell: Riders penalised in eventful claimer
Published: 18/12/2001 (Comment) Colin Russell

David Nolan, Richard Lake and David Allan were given three-day bans for careless riding after some scrimmaging in the apprentices' claimer.
The stewards found that Hibernate, ridden by Nolan, Lake's mount Rambo Waltzer, and Northern Times, partnered by Allan, had all caused interference to Approachable, who then interfered with Lou's Wish and Visitation.
Nolan and Lake will miss racing from December 26-28, while Allan is suspended on December 26 and 27, with one other day for remedial training.
The race went to Colonel Custer, one of three runners trained by Roy Brotherton.

Wolverhampton: Allan triumphant in apprentice series
Published: 06/12/2001 (Yesterday's Action) Will O'Hanlon

DAVID ALLAN won himself a three-week busman's holiday in Dubai after finishing top of the table in the `Hands and Heels' apprentice series, the final of which was staged here after the original finale at Sandown had been lost because of waterlogging, writes Will O'Hanlon.
Allan's mount Latin Bay finished down the field in a race won by Jamie Walsh on the Hughie Morrison-trained Western Bluebird, but in a series where points were awarded for jockeyship rather than finishing positions, the 19-year-old from Stockton finished six points clear of Sam Hitchcott.
Robert Sidebottom, chief instructor at the Newmarket apprentices' school, marked the jockeys on their positioning through the race and their riding of a finish, and Allan amassed a total of 41 points through the series.
Sidebottom said: "It's designed to help young jockeys to help polish their skills, and I'm delighted we've been able to run the decider here after the original date at Sandown in October was lost."
Allan, who is attached to Mel Brittain's stable, will be off to join trainer Kiaran McLaughlin next year for his three-week engagement. "I've never been abroad before, so it should be a great experience," he said.

Wolverhampton rescues apprentice series
Published: 06/11/2001 (News) Graham Green

FEARS that the 2001 `Hands and Heels' Apprentice Series could end in shambles were erased yesterday when Wolverhampton agreed to stage the final round on December 5, writes Graham Green.
After waterlogging at Sandown on October 6 put paid to the scheduled final leg, Weatherbys and Turf 2000 had attempted in vain to find a date and venue before the turn of the year to complete the 11-race series, but now Wolverhampton clerk of the course Fergus Cameron has come to the rescue by identifying a slot in next month's all-weather programme.
While all other championship issues will have been settled when the curtain falls on the Flat campaign this Saturday, the Turf 2000 Ltd-sponsored competition had been at risk of turning into something of a damp squib, but now there will be all to play for in the final race, with four apprentices still in contention.
David Allan leads the standings on 35 points, but Mark Flynn (32), Michael Worrell (31) and Sam Hitchcott (29) all still have a chance of taking the first prize of a working holiday in Dubai with trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.
News that the full series, which is designed to polish the skills of budding young riders, has been rescued will come as a relief to all concerned, not least the sponsors and those at Portman Square. The series was originally the brainchild of Jockey Club director of regulation Malcolm Wallace.

Julie Camacho, who is bringing her brief training career to a close within the next few months, saddled her first-ever winner on the Knavesmire when Mindanao showed her rivals a clean pair of heels in the apprentices' handicap.
Patiently ridden by David Allan, the five-year-old sprinted clear in the closing stages to win by six lengths.
The trainer, who led-up Mindanao, owned by her mother Sue, said: "That's my first at York-and my last, because I won't have another runner here. We'll plod on with one or two horses over the winter, but I won't be re-applying for my licence," she confirmed

Mary Jane comes to layers' rescue

BOOKMAKERS finally got some respite on a day when the punters held the edge as the promising David Allan drove home Mary Jane a clear winner at 9-1 in the apprentices' sprint handicap for fillies.
Nigel Tinkler's six-year-old seemed to be helped by racing alone on the stand rail from halfway and gave Allan his seventh winner of the year.

"We couldn't be at Musselburgh when she won her first race," said Box, "but this makes up for missing her then."
The Mel Brittain-trained filly was retained without a bid at the auction.

Windsor: Beyond The Clouds makes trip worthwhile

APPRENTICE David Allan, who is with Alan Berry, partnered the most valuable winner of his career as Beyond The Clouds proved too good for Henry Hall in the pounds 50,000 Royal Windsor Festival Handicap.
The winner made the long haul from John Wainwright's North Yorkshire yard and ran in the colours of First Class Entertainment, a Wembley-based corporate-entertainment agency.
Peter Charles, representing Wainwright, said: "It's great, and he'll probably go for the six-furlong handicap at Epsom on Saturday."

Letters: Punters were not the only losers
Published: 18/05/2001 (Comment) David Allan

David Allan counts the costs in bloodstock terms
WHILE the issues of punter disappointment and confidence are extremely important, it would be helpful to report other major consequences of such a defeat as that involving Darryll Holland.
Listed and Group races are as much about the breeding value of horses as about the prize-money.
If Island House had won, his own value for racing or as a potential stallion would have increased, as would that of any siblings which include, I think, a Desert King two-year-old filly and a Desert King yearling colt.
These and other relatives, including the dam and future progeny, will not have the boost to their value they would have had if Island House had won. His sire Grand Lodge's statistics would have been further assisted, along with the reputation and value of his many progeny at the sales.
The above is surely worth pointing out, if only to reassure punters that they are not alone.

Redcar: Apprentices suffer mixed fortunes

BENBYAS from the Les Eyre yard followed up his recent win at Pontefract by romping home in the closing handicap under apprentice David Nolan.
It was not such a good race for another apprentice, David Allan, as he was banned for seven days when the stewards considered that he dropped his hands in the final strides on Petuntse and lost second place to Smarter Charter.
Allan's suspension means that he will be unable to ride on Saturday May 12 and will also miss the whole of the week after.
